How to Dispute an Error on your Credit Report

In a previous post, we discussed how to read a credit report and the importance of checking all the information reported for accuracy. If you do find an error on your credit report, it is crucial to correct it, so it does not negatively impact your credit scores in the future.

Once you identify the error, you will start by disputing it with each of the major consumer credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. You will want to write a detailed letter of explanation highlighting the error you are reporting (including account number), why you are disputing it, and requesting that the information be corrected or removed from your report. With you letter of explanation you will want to include contact information for yourself, a copy of the credit report showing the error, and supporting documentation for your disputed credit line. The supporting documentation should be proof of the error. An additional letter from the original creditor suffices for proof or a statement reflecting your accurate account information.

Once filed, the credit reporting companies must investigate your dispute and report the results back. If they find your dispute insignificant, they will do no further investigations and send you a notice within five days of their decision. If they find your dispute to be valid, they will notify all credit reporting agencies so moving forward the corrected information will reflect on your credit report.
