Take a Trip - Society Hill

Society Hill, which lies between the Delaware River to 8th Street, and Walnut Street to Lombard Street, is part of Historic Philadelphia. Once home to notable historic figures such as the first mayor of Philadelphia, Samuel Powel, Society Hill has a wonderful collection of owner-operated boutiques, restaurants, galleries and more, providing residents and tourists alike with no shortage of amenities.

Why We Love It

With incredible proximity to some of Philadelphia’s most prominent historic sites, Society Hill encompasses Washington Square Park, one of William Penn’s original park spaces planned for the city. Just to the South of Independence Hall, residents can easily stroll through the very streets our country’s founders walked along, visit historic sites, and take in views along the water at Spruce Street Harbor Park.

Neighborhood Feel

The Society Hill neighborhood contains one of the largest concentrations of original 18th- and early 19th-century buildings in the United States, and is recognized for it’s brick sidewalks, cobblestone streets and Franklin street lamps. The homes in this peaceful neighborhood are predominantly two to four story brick row-houses, constructed in Federal and Georgian architectural styles.

Our Favorite Restaurants

One of Society Hill’s most notable restaurants, Zahav, is a peaceful place to enjoy a Middle Eastern inspired meal on their outdoor patio, and you can learn more about Zahav in our local business feature here! Other local favorites include Creperie Baeu Monde & L’etage, a French restaurant that never fails to delight, and Little Fish BYOB which offers a seasonal selection of delicious seafood dishes.

Arts and Culture

Visit the Powel House, once home to our city’s first mayor, Samuel Powel and his wife Elizabeth, and take in the untouched historic charm of this elegant mansion. The Fleisher Art Memorial carries on the vision of Samuel S. Fleisher, a prominent philanthropist in the 19th century, offering an array of art classes, workshops, and studio spaces for artists of every variety.

Local Parks

Part of Society Hill, Washington Square Park is a beautiful space to wander through tree lined walking paths, and offers plenty of space to lay out and soak up the sun. The park boasts a beautiful fountain, as well as the tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, which serves as a memorial to all our fallen soldiers. Just next to Washington Square, neighborhood residents flock to the expansive Independence National Historic Parkto spend time with friends on the lawn, explore Independence Hall, and enjoy some serenity amidst the bustle of city life.

Schools

Society Hill is part of the School District of Philadelphia, and you can find more information about the district and schooling options here!
