Neighborhood Spotlight: Washington Square West

Washington Square West is a thriving area of Philadelphia that includes Midtown Village and the Gayborhood. Midtown Village is packed full of personality, popular restaurants, and shops, and The Gayborhood sets itself apart from other Philly neighborhoods with rainbow street signs and an incredibly welcoming community of residents. Tying it all together, Washington Square itself serves has a perfect place for families and resident to spend time outside and take in their neighborhood’s charm.

 

Why We Love It

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, Washington Square West Historic District encompasses 61-acres (250,000 m2) and 450 contributing buildings such as the Clinton Street Historic District, and Portico Row. This area of Philadelphia is full of young residents, history, and beautiful homes along every street!

 

Neighborhood Feel

Living in Washington Square West offers residents an urban feel, but with quiet residential streets tucked away throughout. There are a ton of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks, and this neighborhood is very popular for young professionals! A perfect mix of condos and row-houses line each street, providing the charm of Philadelphia’s history with the modern luxuries of city-living.

 

Our Favorite Restaurants

Inspired by the farm-to-table ethos sweeping the nation, Talula’s Garden serves up meals with fresh ingredients for brunch and dinner in a beautiful space. Other local favorites include Middle Child, serving delicious sandwiches all day with a wonderful menu including everything from breakfast sandwiches to house-made soups, and CHeU Noodle Bar, a hip ramen bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. Some other notable favorites are Sampan, Double Knot, El Vez, and High Street Philly.

 

Arts and Culture

Inside an 18th-century brownstone, The Bridgette Meyer Gallery houses a collection of contemporary paintings, sculpture and photography by emerging and mid-career artists. Nearby, The James Oliver Gallery is home to an extensive collection of local, national, and international artists in the realm of painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography, and installation works.

 

Local Parks

Of course, Washington Square Park is a staple of the neighborhood, with walking paths and beautiful flora and fauna. Seger Park includes a wonderfully sized playground, perfect for families to spend some time outside with one another, and Washington Square Park is just steps from Independence National Historical Park!
